First of all I want to say, Rest In Peace to The Rammellzee. He was an innovator for Progressive Hip-Hop, Graffiti and throughout the art world. He brought the ideas of abstract art and hip-hop together for the first time. I didn't know Ramm, but I did have the pleasure of interviewing him for my podcast, Uncommon Radio once. I came across this opportunity because my DJ, Shortrock, had become friends with him and linked us up.

Let me say this, Ramm was the genuine article. He was eccentric and lived up to all aspects of his reputation. In doing some research on him I landed at his website, Gothic Futurism. At the time it had some past interviews he was a part of and some quotes of his. Many of them were bitter rants against old graffiti writers and new hip-hop producers. Along with that were some amazing pics of his art, his deep bio and lots more. But, after reading some of his comments, I knew I'd be in for a hell of an interview.

After contacting him, we agreed that I would pick him up at his apartment in Battery Park City. For those that don't know New York, Battery Park City is a part of Manhattan below where the World Trade Center site is. For the most part the apartments there would be considered "pricey". I had never been to that neighborhood before. I pulled up to the drive way, where I was told by security that I'd be allowed to leave my car there for 15 minutes while I get my guest. Wow, I wasn't used to this kind of shit.

I went to his apartment and rang the bell, I kind of felt like he was going to open the door in full regalia and didn't know what to expect. The door opened and a tall man opened the door to a fairly small apartment that was extremely well kept and featured lots of his art throughout. He invited me in, and while he finished getting ready to head out I checked out his Letter Racers that were proudly displayed in the living room. He explained a very grandiose story behind the making of them. Talked about how certain letters "battled" against others in some sort of "league". It was very intricate, I don't want to do him a disservice by remembering it incorrectly and put words in his mouth. As we left the building he got hellos from neighbors and the guard, all of them called him "Ramm". It was a weird cross reference. A hip hop & graffiti legend living in a high class building in Downtown Manhattan where, as he told me Police Commissioner Ray Kelly held a property as well.

We left and headed back to my place to record the episode on Staten Island, we stopped at the local bodega where he promptly purchased 3 bottles of Old English. I'll never forget how amped he was that they were so cheap on Staten Island. We sat down for the interview, he slowly drank and I asked the questions. He dropped some amazing knowledge. Really, he broke down things that NO ONE else possibly could. Literally talking about the very beginnings of hip-hop and how battles started in hip-hop. If memory serves, I even got him to drop a little freestyle at the end of it.

He was a trip to be around. None of what he was was an act. He was all Rammellzee. In between recordings he told me stories about other abstract artists like Bill Laswell and guitarist Buckethead. He talked about good times and bad times in addition to what he told me on the air.

It was an exhausting day, he was an intimating guy at his size and I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little scared at times with that combined with some of his abstract thoughts. Even with that in mind I had respect for who I was sitting with.

I drove him home and our conversation at one point turned to alternative energy. He explained with all seriousness about a theory of his. He said the way the United States could get energy would be if we filled the Grand Canyon with water and flooded it. Then drilled the bottom of the Canyon to create a whirlpool. Once the whirl pool was created helicopters could create a magnetic force with giant magnets that would make the whirl pool permanent and then the energy could be captured from that whirl pool. That story was both completely insane and insanely brilliant at the same time. To think that someone's mind could come up with something that detailed that fast, it was like freestyled science fiction.

I dropped him off, after a long day. A few days later he called me up screaming about he wanted his copy of the interview immediately. He was really bugging out. It all seemed to fit with the profile that his reputation painted. He was an eccentric dude, with somewhat of a temper. I explained that I would get it to him and never said he'd have it in days. He seemed to understand, I hung up. I sent him the interview (hell yes I did) and we didn't speak again.

As frenetic as that whole experience was, it felt like longer then a day at times, it was all worth it. Even though we had some friction a few days later, I knew I had sat down with a legendary artist and had to take him as a whole.

At the time, I was posting Uncommon Radio only at the Uncommon Records website. Later I moved it to an RSS feed that put it on Itunes and other Podfeeders. It quickly became one of the most downloaded episodes of the guest oriented early episodes I'd done. That coupled with the information I was able to get out of the interview made it clear to me that I captured something that was historic. I'm really proud I was able to do this and hope that now that he is unfortunately gone that this helps spread word about him for younger generations.

Always ahead of his time, New York artist and performer Rammellzee (born in 1960 in Queens, New York) is credited with being one of the inventors of graffiti art as we know it. Through writing, drawing and painting on subway cars in spray paint and felt-tip pen in the late ‘70s, he became interested in the symbolic value of letters, seeing for example the letter “A” as a pyramid or taking “W” to mean “double-you.” He has continued to explore these ideas through a variety of media ever since, from the paintings that in 1988 Gerrit Henry described in Art In America as having “a Star-Wars-via-Jackson-Pollock look” to the legendary hip-hop single “Beat Bop” that was produced by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and became not just one of the most collectible hip hop releases ever, but a model for generations of witty and experimental musicians after him.

In the mid-80’s, Rammellzee became associated with a group of artists who painted or tagged in a style known as East Village wild style. This was an illegible, dynamic style of writing letters derived originally from the Gothic script of Medieval manuscripts. In 1982, he appeared in the seminal hip hop documentary Wildstyle by Charlie Ahearn. Rammellzee named his style “Gothic Futurism,” describing the battle between letters and their symbolic warfare against any standardizations enforced by the rules of the alphabet. When his style of writing became more mainstream in the world of graffiti, Rammellzee built his letters into flying armored vehicles, bursting forth with a style and philosophy all his own that he termed “Ikonoclast Panzerism.” Jan van Adrichem and Marjin van Nieuwenhuyzen wrote in the catalog for his 1986 retrospective that, as in the biblical story of the city of Babel, in Rammellzee’s system “people do not use language, language uses people; it has become an autonomous force.”

Rammellzee has shown in galleries throughout New York City and Europe. His work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He performs in self-designed masks and costumes of different characters of his own creation. Most recently, he has returned to the world of music, releasing an album in 2004 called The Bi-Conicals of the Rammellzee, for which he’s performed shows in the U.S. and Japan. He also designs clothes for the New York City skate company Supreme.

Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988) Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York to Matilde and Gerard Basquiat. His mother was Puerto Rican and his father is an accountant of Haitian origin.Because of his parents' nationalities, Basquiat was fluent in French, Spanish, and English before the age of eleven. He read in these languages, including Symbolist poetry, mythology, and history.At an early age, Basquiat displayed an aptitude for art and was encouraged by his mother to draw, paint, and to participate in other art-related activities. In late 1977, while a student at City-As-School high school in Brooklyn, Basquiat and his friend Al Diaz started spray-painting graffiti art on buildings in lower Manhattan, adding the signature of "SAMO." The graphics were messages such as "Plush safe he think.. SAMO" and "SAMO as an escape clause". In December 1978, the Village Voice published an article about the writings.The SAMO project ended with the epitaph "SAMO IS DEAD" written on the walls of SoHo buildings.

Basquiat dropped out of high school in September 1978, at the beginning of his senior year. He decided to leave his home and began living with friends, earning money by selling T-shirts and postcards on Manhattan's streets, and working in the Unique Clothing Warehouse on Broadway. By 1979, Basquiat had appeared on Glenn O'Brien's live public-access cable show TV Party. In the late 1970s, Basquiat formed a band called Gray with Shannon Dawson, Michael Holman, Nick Taylor, Wayne Clifford. Gray performed at nightclubs such as Max's Kansas City, CBGB, Hurrahs, and the Mudd Club. Basquiat starred in an underground film Downtown 81 which featured some of Gray's recordings on its soundtrack.[7] He also appeared in Blondie's video "Rapture" as a club disc jockey.

In June 1980, Basquiat participated in The Times Square Show, a multi-artist exhibition, sponsored by Collaborative Projects Incorporated (Colab) and Fashion Moda. In 1981, Rene Ricard published "The Radiant Child" in Artforum magazine,[8] which brought Basquiat to the attention of the wider art world.

In late 1981 he joined the Annina Nosei gallery in SoHo. By 1982, Basquiat was showing regularly, and alongside Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi, became part of what was called the Neo-expressionist movement. He was represented in Los Angeles by the Larry Gagosian gallery, and in Europe by Bruno Bischofberger. He started dating then-aspiring performer Madonna in autumn 1982. That same year, Basquiat met Andy Warhol, with whom he collaborated in 1984-1986. He was also briefly involved with artist David Bowes. Basquiat worked on his paintings in Armani suits and often appeared in public in these same paint-splattered $1000 suits.[9][page needed][10]

By the mid 1980s, he had left Annina Nosei gallery, and was showing in the famous Mary Boone gallery in SoHo. On February 10, 1985, Basquiat appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine in a feature entitled "New Art, New Money: The Marketing of an American Artist".[11] He was a phenomenally successful artist in this period, but increasing drug use began to interfere with his personal relationships.

He started as a graffiti writer in New York City, and in the 1980s produced Neo-expressionist painting. Basquiat died of a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988.

MAN PARRISH

Although he produced only a handful of tracks of renown and disappeared into obscurity almost as quickly as he had emerged from it, Manny ( Man ) Parrish is nonetheless one of the most important and influential figures in American electronic dance music. Helping to lay the foundation of electro, hip-hop, freestyle, and techno, as well as the dozens of subgenres to splinter off from those, Parrish introduced the aesthetic of European electronic pop to the American club scene by combining the plugged-in disco-funk of Giorgio Moroder and the man-machine music of Kraftwerk with the beefed-up rhythms and cut'n'mix approach of nascent hip-hop. As a result, tracks like "Hip-Hop Be Bop (Don't Stop)" and "Boogie Down Bronx" were period-defining works that provided the basic genetic material for everyone from Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys to Autechre and Andrea Parker -- and they remain undisputed classics of early hip-hop and electro to this day. A native New Yorker, Parrish was a member of the extended family of glam-chasers and freakazoids that converged nightly on Andy Warhol's Studio 54 club. His nickname, Man, first appeared in Warhol's Interview magazine, and his early live shows at Bronx hip-hop clubs were spectacles of lights, glitter, and pyrotechnics that drew as much from the Warhol mystique as from the Cold Crush Brothers.

Influenced by the electronic experiments of his good friend and co - writer Klaus Nomi and Brian Eno as well as by Kraftwerk, Parrish together with "Cool" Raul Rodriguez recorded their best-known work in a tiny studio sometimes shared with Afrika Baambaata, whose own sessions with Arthur Baker and John Robie produced a number of classics equal to Parrish's own, including "Wildstyle, " "Looking for the Perfect Beat, " and the infamous "Planet Rock." What distinguished "Hip-Hop Be Bop, " however, was its lack of vocals and the extremely wide spectrum of popularity it gained in the club scene, from ghetto breakdance halls to uptown clubs like Danceteria and the Funhouse. After he discovered a pirated copy of his music being played by a local DJ at theinfamous "Anvil" club ( NYC ), Parrish found his way to the offices of the Importe label (a subsidiary of popular dance imprint Sugarscoop and Disconet DJ mixing service), which whom he inked his first deal. He released his self-titled LP shortly after, and the album went on to sell over 2 million copies worldwide. He was signed to Electra Records and managed by David Bowie's notorious manager Tony De Fries and the infamous Main Man Ltd management team. Tony De Fries had managed careers of David Bowie, New York Dolls, Mott the Hoople, Mick Ronson and Dana Gillespie to name a few.

Following a period of burn-out that followed, Parrish recorded and remixed tracks for Michael Jackson, Boy George, Gloria Gaynor, and Hi-NRG group Man2Man, among others, and served as manager for the Village People and Crystal Water to name a few. While Parrish's subsequent material has achieved nowhere near the success or creative pitch of his earlier work, he continues to record from his brooklyn studio and is a frequent DJ at New York's eclectic night spots and SM clubs. His Sunday Underground Party "Sperm" at the "Cock Bar" on New Yorks lower east side, is notorious, to say the least ! He is main DJ and co founder for a circut party called "Hustlerball" which has parties in many cities worldwide. He also has several adult websites and online businesses which keep him busy as a webmaster, and "jack of all trades". His second LP, DreamTime, appeared on Strictly Rhythm in 1997.

THE RAMMELLZEE

Rammellzee (or RAMMΣLLZΣΣ, pronounced "Ram: Ell: Zee", born 1960 in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York), is a graffiti writer, performance artist, rap/hip-hop musician and sculptor from New York.

Rammellzee's graffiti and art work are based on his theory of Gothic Futurism, which describes the battle between letters and their symbolic warfare against any standardizations enforced by the rules of the alphabet; his treatise, "Iconic Panzerisms", details an anarchic plan by which to revise the role and deployment of language in society. Rammellzee is often identified as an artist apart of the Afrofuturism canon; Afrofuturism is identified discourse concerned with revisioning racial identity through the tropes of science fiction and fantasy narrative or aesthetics.

He was also instrumental as one of the original hip hop artists from the New York area who introduced specific vocal styles which date back to the early 1980s.[citation needed] His influence can still be heard in contemporary artists such as The Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill. His song "Beat Bop" was featured in the film Style Wars.

Discovered by a larger audience through the 1982 cult movie Wild Style by Charlie Ahearn, his fame in graffiti circles was established when he painted New York subway trains with Dondi, OU3, and Ink 76, and doctor Revolt. Rammellzee was also a member of the Death Comet Crew, with Stewart Albright and Michael Diekmann. In 1988, he and his band Gettovetts recorded the album "Missionaries Moving." In 2003, Rammellzee performed at the Knitting Factory in New York with the newly reformed Death Comet Crew; subsequently, Troubleman Unlimited re-released recordings made by DCC between 1982 and 1984; additionally, their single for "Exterior St." was featured on the compilation, Anti-NY, with contemporaries, Ike Yard, Sexual Harassment, and Vivian Goldmann, among others. In 2004, he released his debut album Bi-Conicals of the Rammellzee, produced by Gomma Records. Rammellzee also performed at Knitting Factory with guitarist Buckethead several times.

His artistic work has been shown in art galleries throughout the US and Europe. Currently, Rammellzee's Letter Racers, and other Noise includes artistic works by individuals mostly identified with their musical contributions.

In a recent interview, he stated that his name is derived from "RAM" plus "'M' for 'Magnitude', 'Sigma' (Σ) the first summation operator, first 'L' - 'longitude', second 'L' - 'latitude', 'Z' - 'z-bar', Σ, Σ - 'summation'." He now performs in self-designed masks and costumes of different characters, which, as he states, represent the "mathematical equation" that is Rammellzee. On the basis of his "Gothic Futurism" approach, he sometimes describes his current artistic work as the logical extension into a new phase which he calls "Ikonoklast Panzerism."

Rammellzee makes a cameo appearance near the end of Jim Jarmusch's 1984 film Stranger Than Paradise.

Each week the Pseudo Online Network produced and netcast more than fifty different interactive Net-TV shows, representing over 200 hours of original live programming per month. Pseudo's shows covered a range of non-mainstream topics underserved by traditional broadcast and cable networks. Some really underground shit. Shows like 88 Hip Hop, Static Channel, StreetSound, ParseTV, Cherrybomb, FILM BYTES etc. It was really the first of its kind. If you can find any video archives of 88 Hiphop etc. I would definately recommend!

Endearing cult hit written and produced by Stuart Argabright, whose other early projects include Ike Yard and Death Comet Crew, with vocals by Claudia Summer and synthesizer by Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream. While certainly not the first song to address bondage culture, it was still a gutsy single for it’s time, combining post-punk and new wave into an adorable post-disco playground, written by Argabright out of genuine respect and admiration for professional NYC dominatrixes who earned a living by chaining up, whipping, and torturing upscale Manhattan businessmen.

New York City in the late 1970s was a city near bankrupt from the US economic stagnation where electricity blackouts, poverty, spiraling welfare debt and crime rates soared. However, this proved fertile ground for a flourishing community of confrontational artists, musicians and filmmakers.

Taking a punk, do-it-yourself approach, these artists picked up super 8 cameras and began to turn them on themselves and their friends. Artists such as Jim Jarmusch, Nick Zedd, Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch and Amos Poe debuted early works to an audience of their peers. Imbuing their art with a poetic anger they carved out a nihilistic, street-level aesthetic that left an indelible mark on the art world.

Full of interviews with the major players and rarely seen footage, BLANK CITY looks at how this explosion of creativity dubbed No Wave Cinema and Cinema of Transgression has lost none of its raw power and the shock-waves still reverberate today.

I've played everywhere from Fashion Shows to Club Venues since the 1980'z. Staring at a club called Stargaze, Club Moda, Kabuki Fashion shows etc... I learned from the best, early 80z latin disco and highenergy djs - Radical Rich - Studio 47, Carlos Diaz, Cameron Paul, Richard Torres, TDC, Bubba G Scott, Bobby Rocha, Alexander Mejia and Dave Moss to name a few! I compare House music to Jazz music in that there both true American street art forms that appeal to those who truly understand! cuz "NOT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS HOUSE MUSIC". I believe in the foundation and preservation of house and try not to get caught up in the "NOW" fads like too much electro or world beat. Shit always goes back to basics! My style is authentic, soulful, vocal, 4-4 beat, chords style house music, - as in "Kerri Chandler, Jovann, New York, New Jersey, Chi-Town, Detroit etc. I call it "back to basics". That church soul - Authentic American street House Music.

The Paradise Garage was founded by Michael Brody, its sole proprietor, and was located at 84 King Street, New York City. It operated from 1977 to 1987 and was the base for DJ Larry Levan. Its name derives from its origins as a parking garage. The Paradise Garage's business model was largely inspired by David Mancuso's Loft parties: no liquor was served, there were no sales of food or beverages, and the club was not open to the general public.

The sound system was Developed, Designed and Installed by Richard Long & Associates, Kenny Powers (RLA) and was said by those that attended to be the best in New York City at that time. The club has been credited for its influence on the development of the modern dance club as it is today: unlike other clubs of its time, the Paradise Garage was focused on dancing rather than social interaction, and it was the first to put the DJ at the center of attention.

Among those to benefit from what became known as "The Garage Sound" or "Garage Music" was West End Records, run by Mel Cheren. Among its successes were "Sessomatto" by Sessa Matto, Karen Young's "Hot Shot," "Heartbeat" by Taana Gardner (remixed by Levan) and "Don't Make Me Wait" by the Peech Boys (produced by Levan). West End Records folded for a number of years, re-opening in the late 90s and releasing one of Levan's DJ sets recorded live at the Garage. In the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, a post-disco radio station, Paradise FM plays music representative of the club's playlists at the height of its popularity. Tim Curry had a minor hit with a song about the club, also named "Paradise Garage." From 1992 UK music production and remix team called West End produced many UK #1 Club Hits in the style of "The Garage Sound" then 1994 grew into a company called West End Radio Productions, whose founder, Eddie Gordon, created the Essential Mix Show for BBC Radio 1 in the UK. A weekly 2 hour dance music mix show that was inspired by the legend of the Paradise Garage music and the originator of the art of two deck mixing DJ Larry Levan. After 16 years the Essential Mix is now the world's longest running dance mix show on Radio.

Zanzibar actually started off as Abe's Disco at the Lincoln Motel with Gerald T as the house DJ.

Miles Berger, the owner of the Lincoln Motel, wanted to bring some of the New York Disco Nightlife to New Jersey afer visiting the Paradise Garage in NY. He had Richard Long & Associates design a sound, lighting & special effects system and converted the 2nd floor ballroom of the Lincoln Motel to become, what was then, the premiere club in NJ.

Opening night was Aug 29, 1979. Club Zanzibar had 2 levels with DJ Hippe playing the larger 2nd level & House DJ Gerald T playing the 1st level (the original Abe's). Eventually DJ Hippie became the full time house DJ from 1979 to 1981.
Over time, the term "garage" in the US came to mainly describe the more soulful, gospel-inspired styles of disco and house music first made popular by Tony Humphries at club Zanzibar in Newark, NJ.

In the 1990s, the New Jersey sound became distinctly different from in New York. Although the Paradise Garage was a New York club, the label "Garage" came to be associated with the New Jersey sound over time as the bond between the Paradise Garage and club Zanzibar was strong. A rawer, "blacker" sound, as described above, became the signature style in North Jersey. Meanwhile in 90s New York a more Latin, Tribal sound took over thanks to Junior Vasquez and his disciples at the Sound Factory. However, the garage tradition returned in force with Body & Soul, a collective formed by Francois K., Danny Krivit and Joaquin "Joe" Claussell, and its immensely popular Sunday sessions (now defunct). Louie Vega has continued to perform regularly on Wednesdays, although without the popularity he has in Europe or Japan. Timmy Regisford is another stalwart of the NYC house community with his Saturday night parties at legendary Club Shelter.

DANIEL WANG - Balihu Records (Recognize)

Born in Northern California, Daniel Wang spent 8 years of his childhood in Taiwan, returned to California for high school, and attended university in New York and Chicago. Instead of finishing his papers, however, he ran out to underground clubs and danced all night to early house music and disco classics, befriending and learning from a few old-school voguers and DJ's along the way.
Dissatisfied with the increasingly unmusical soundtrack of modern nightlife, Danny started Balihu Records in 1993. The first release became a cult success. Danny moved back to NYC and eventually found a job at Dr. Sound Music Store, where he delved deeply into vintage production gear and synths, including the Theremin.
Balihu put out a range of unusual tracks from 1994 to 2000 in the spirit of Philly and Italo Disco, and Wang began producing for the Environ label in 1997. In the past years, he has performed around the world, and his originality is gradually being recognized.

House label run by Frank and Karen Mendez between 1988 and 1992. It was the brainchild of Frank, Karen and Judy Russell and was initially founded to release stuff by Rheji & Ronald Burrell who have been managed by Frank and Karen at the time.

Nugroove, built on the foundation of the Burrell twins who'd escaped from an abortive r'n'b career with Virgin Records, was fast becoming the hippest house label. Nugroove had started the year before with records like Bas Noir's 'My Love Is Magic' and Aphrodisiac's 'Your Love' and by 1989 they were on a roll.

Nugroove never had a sound - with producers as disparate as the Burrells, Bobby Konders and Frankie Bones that wasn't conceivable - and they never really had one big record, but the concept of the label went from strength to strength. Among their producers was Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez, yet to hook up with Little Louie Vega, who was moving into house with his Freestyle Orchestra project. Nugroove's first competitor was to come in the form of Strictly Rhythm, who opened up in 1989.

The duo of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez are the preeminent production/remix team in house music, their nom de plume Masters at Work standing behind dozens of the biggest club hits and remixes of their time. Effectively soundtracking the American nightclub scene of the 1990s, Vega and Gonzalez blended their love of the disparate music coming from New York's underground clubs during the 1980s -- disco, the freewheeling garage scene, emerging house and hip-hop styles, Latin freestyle -- to enormously influence the mainstream dance sound as it coalesced during the following decade. Besides their productions, remixes, and appearances as Masters at Work, Vega and/or Gonzalez are also involved in a good dozen other projects (including Nuyorican Soul, KenLou, the Bucketheads, and the Untouchables), many of which appear on the duo's own MAW Records label.

Both Vega and Gonzalez were born to parents living in New York (the Bronx and Brooklyn, respectively), though of Puerto Rican heritage. Consequently, both were early influenced by the Big Apple's fertile salsa scene during the '70s. (Vega's uncle is the renowned salsa vocalist Hector Lavoe, and his father played saxophone in Latin groups for over 30 years, while Gonzalez's father, Hector Torres, is also a salsa expert.) During the early '80s, both were noted DJs around New York, though Vega immersed himself in house and freestyle while Gonzalez entered the rap scene. (The separate interests came in handy later, as dance fan Vega concentrated on songwriting and groove-making while hip-hop head Gonzalez programmed beats and samples.) The pair also worked separately as producers, and Vega had already made a name for himself working on dozens of freestyle tracks and remixes by Nice & Smooth, Information Society, and India. Gonzalez, working as a mobile DJ with a team calling themselves the Masters at Work, founded his own Dope Wax Records and worked on production for all of the major New York dance labels: Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, Cutting, and Big Beat. In 1987, he loaned out the name Masters at Work to Todd Terry for the 1987 single "Alright Alright" (a huge club hit), then Terry returned the favor one year later by introducing him to Vega.

After comparing notes, the pair decided that combining their wide range of influences could be an interesting experiment. They released their first Masters at Work single, the appropriately titled "Blood Vibes," on Cutting Records. Since Vega still had remixing contracts from his solo days, the pair decided to apply the MAW treatment first to Debbie Gibson's "One Step Ahead." The dance community was reasonably shocked to hear a disposable pop artist given a respectable, even exciting, dance sound.

House production teams rarely released albums of their own productions under their own name, but a Masters at Work LP appeared in 1993, on Cutting Records. The album mixed older singles with newer productions, and featured guest slots for vocalists like Jocelyn Brown and India (the latter of whom is also Vega's wife) plus producers like Todd Terry and Maurice Joshua. The reputation of Vega and Gonzalez grew soon and they received pleas from most of the major labels to contribute remixes, adding to their résumé Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Madonna, St. Etienne, George Benson, Brand New Heavies, Lisa Stansfield, Deee-Lite, Everything But the Girl, Chic, Soul II Soul, Neneh Cherry, Ce Ce Peniston, and dozens more.

My biggest DJ Influence and The True Pioneer of keeping house DIRTY!

Ron Hardy is the only man who can test Frankie Knuckles' status as Godfather of Chicago House Music.
Though he rarely recorded under his own name and left little evidence of his life, Hardy was the major name for Chicago's dance music from the late '70s to the mid-'80s. By 1974, he had already effected a continuous music mix with reel-to-reel machines plus a dual-turntable setup at the club Den One. Several years later, Hardy played with Knuckles at a club called the Warehouse and though he spent several years in Los Angeles, he later returned to Chicago to open his own club along with Robert Williams, the Music Box.

While Knuckles was translating disco and the emerging house music to a straight, southside audience at the Power Plant, Hardy's 72-hour mix sessions and flamboyant party lifestyle fit in well with the uptown, mostly gay audience at the Music Box. A roll-call of major Chicago producers including Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Phuture's DJ Pierre and Chip E all debuted their compositions by pressing up acetates or reel-to-reel copies for Hardy to play during the mid-'80s.
Lingering problems with heroin addiction forced him to leave the Music Box around 1986 and though he continued to DJ around the area, Hardy wasn't around when Chicago became house music's mecca later in the decade.

Deejay Ron Hardy died in 1991, and that's the only reason why he's not a star today. With the clubs he's been spinning for (especially the Music Box from 1983 to 1988), he was drawing the way of the new sounds of the night. Something was definitely changing, and he was part of the change. You know that one day 'Jack Has a Groove'... but did you really know when late Disco turned into early House music? Ron Hardy was it. Icon of the gay House nights of Chicago, that man was a deejay like some others are monk... it was everything for him, a sort of religion. Mixing speedy electro-pop with accelerated disco, edited disco-classics with acid tracks, when other deejays used to mix it warm... he used to mix it cold. One of his very close friends told me that he was almost never sleeping... mixing records all the time, doing weird things with his turntables. There was about nothing in his appartment, nothing but black shiny records, and a bed... and that for years since the 70's when he left for westcoast, the 80's when he came back to Chicago, until 91 when everything stopped. Too much drugs and awaken nights... he killed his own batteries for the music.
At least we still have the tapes of his talent and the memories of his friends.
